vacation thrift store finds

I'm pretty sure this is the last post that is vacation related.

Whew.

Sorry if I dragged it all out.

But not only do I post all this to share with you, but to document it for myself.

It's like my very own electronic scrapbook.

Anyways,  here's the last of it...

I wanted to share my Idahoan thrift store finds!

I found this teal and ivory zig zag afghan in an antique store in downtown Coeur d'Alene for only $4.50!  You can't buy the yarn to make one for that cheap.  Total steal.

I picked up these two vintage quilt blocks at an antique store in Sandpoint, ID, for about $6.50 a piece.  I love that every time I look at them, I will be reminded of the beautiful, little city on gorgeous Lake Pend Orielle.  They are soooo soft, and hand quilted.  They've already been washed and sewn into pillow covers for our bed; I just need to pick up some 16x16 pillow inserts.  They might be my favorite find of the trip.

I found some really great vintage-y pillow cases at a Hospice Thrift Store in Post Falls - two of the golden stripe (for $1.50) and one blue floral (for $.50).   One of the striped pillow cases was sacrificed for the back of the quilt squares to make the pillow covers.  They look pretty darn cute.

A perfect little mug for twenty-three cents.

All of my finds look so pretty together.

Callan got lots of books on this trip.  He got this (nearly complete) set of books from Goodwill, in Post Falls.  Both Travis and I had these as kids, so, clearly, our kiddo needs to have them, too.  :)

And you can't go wrong with $2 Dr. Seuss books (antique store prices), The Stinky Cheese Man for $3 (hardcover, antique store price), and a random $.10 book for when he's a bit older (thrift store price).

And I picked up a sweater, plaid, button-down shirt, and zip-up hoodie for Callan.  All in great shape.

The thrift store prices were pretty fantastic and hard to beat.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be craving a return trip to each of these stores in a month or two.
But I certainly won't be craving the 1630 mile road trip to get there.

thrifty finds

Yesterday morning we ran out to two of our local thrift stores.  Nothing like a little pre-Christmas thrifting.  The purpose of our trip was to, hopefully, find an embroidery hoop so I could finish up a Christmas gift for a friend.  I have found that they are way cheaper at the thrift stores than buying them brand new at, say, Hobby Lobby.

We had a pretty successful thrifting adventure.

This chair = tufted seat and back, perfect colors, nailhead trim around the legs, no stains, great shape = MINE.

We can finally put the 4th dining chair back in the dining room, because this little beauty found a new home at our computer desk.

Love the tufting.

Love the price.  $14.96

The thrift store didn't disappoint; I found just the right sized embroidery hoop that I needed.  It came with two smaller ones, too.  Bonus.  All three were $.93.  I also found a plain white mug.  $.79 - 40% = practically free.

And I bought thrift store clothes for the first time.  *Gasp*, I know.  So, maybe they're not for me, but they're size 24 months and in great shape.  I have always thought it a little skeevy buying thrift store clothes - God knows where they come from, but I might finally be over that.  I can always run them on the washer's sanitizing cycle.  Now I just need the patience to actually sift through all the dated, [ugly] clothes to find the half-way decent, hey-i-can-work-with-that articles of clothing. These two shirts for Callan were $1.49 and $2.49, not bad.

So at thrift store #1, I scored that great chair, 3 embroidery hoops, a plain white mug, and 2 shirts for our little man, all for a whopping $21.75.

I felt so good after our finds at the first store we hit up, I convinced Travis to head over to another thrift store [one that we've never had luck at, but I figured third times a charm].  Here's what came home with us from store #2:

A white, ceramic, duck head hook.  A splurge at $.99.  

And a pack of Christmas bulbs.  $.59 - 60% = even more practically free than the white mug from the first store.

I have this project in mind for next year, so I'm on a bulb hunt.

We walked out of thrift store #2 spending a crazy, out of control $1.33.

Successful thrifting outings make me happy.

And so does that pretty, tufted chair.

"urned" potential

Remember these?

A few weeks ago, Travis and I picked these up at a local thrift store for $.69 a piece.  (See this post to be reminded.)  I had no idea what I was going to do with them when I purchased them, but I was drawn to their shape, color, and potential.  I'm not quite sure that they have reached their full potential, as of the moment, but for the holiday season they have certainly found a purpose.  And I'm digging it.

Topiaries!  Just a pine cone (from Sequoia National Park - a sweet reminder of CA) and these little while footed urns.  It doesn't get any easier, people.

This past Friday, Travis and I checked out another thrift store, Park Avenue Thrift, that we came across in town.  It was a complete bust, so we decided to head over to our favorite thrift store, Hope Outreach, to see if they got in any new treasures that called out to us.  Nothing caught our eyes at first...until we turned the corner to the furniture section.  There it was.  A chunky, wood, full sized bed frame - perfect for the guest room!  And the price?  $24.96.  Uhm, yes, I'll be taking that home with me, thank you.

Eventually, (when we have the space, not to mention the time) the bed will get a good sanding and a fresh coat of paint (color yet to be determined), but for now, a good cleaning will suffice.  After all, dents, dings, and scratches add character.  At least that's my motto. 

it's kind of bland against the "apartment white" walls, but we're working with what we've got right now

new guest bedding, at least new throw pillows, are on my list of things "to-do"

The only "thing" about this bed is that it does not require the box spring - another thing we have to find a place for in storage.  Joy.  But we think this bed is totally cute and well worth the $25ish we paid for it.  What do you think?  What's that?  You want to know if it's comfy?  Well, you'll have to come find out for yourselves ;)
